Pop Quiz: How Much Do You Really Know About Cannabis 2.0?

Believe it or not, despite coming into effect several months ago, we haven’t dived too deep into Cannabis 2.0 here. At least not into some of its nuts and bolts. Until now.

Except rather than us telling you what we think you should know about it, first we want to find out how much you already do — or don’t.

That’s right. It’s time for a pop quiz!

A) CBD-based hand creams

B) Vaping products

C) Weed-infused brownies

D) Both A & B

E) Both B & C

F) All of the above

2. Consumers were able to purchase Cannabis 2.0 goods immediately after the new regulations came into effect on October 17th.

A) True

B) False

3. Newly legal cannabis-derivative products are allowed to contain which of the following:

C) Nicotine

D) All of the above

E) None of the above

4. Whether food or beverage, the amount of THC in cannabis edibles is being capped at:

D) 20 milligrams per container

5. According to its vice-president of corporate affairs, the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) doesn’t expect supply shortages on Cannabis 2.0 products to be as long and lingering as the supply problems that plagued the first rollout of recreational cannabis in late 2018 and well into last year.

A) True

B) False

That’s it! That’s the test! Now, let’s fill some space with a few semi-appropriate lyrics from perennial weed favourites Cypress Hill so that you can’t easily glance down and cheat. Bear with us. We’ll get to the answers momentarily.

Pick it, pack it, fire it up, come along

And take a hit from the bong

Put the blunt down just for a second

Don't get me wrong it's not a new method

Inhale, exhale, just got a ounce in the mail

I like a blunt or a big fat coal

But my double barrel bong is gettin' me stoned

I'm skill it, there's water inside don't spill it

It smells like sh*t on the carpet

Still it, goes down smooth when I get a clean hit

Of the skunky funky smelly green sh*t

Sing my song, puff all night long

As I take hits from the bong

Okay, let’s see how you did.

1. The correct answer was F…

With next-generation cannabis products such as beverages, edibles, topical forms of cannabis and vapes being made legal, that obviously includes items like CBD-based hand creams, vaping products and weed-infused brownies.

2. False…

Owing to the 60-day notice period that companies were required to provide to Health Canada before selling these products, the earliest these Cannabis 2.0 goods were able to go on sale was mid-December. But that was an early estimate. At the end of the day, they were officially made available in brick-and-mortar stores in Ontario the first week of January, with online sales beginning on January 16th.

3. The correct answer was E…

In addition to not being allowed to contain alcohol, caffeine and nicotine, companies will not be able to call their beverages “beer” or “wine.” What’s more, these cannabis-derivative products will be subject to strict regulations, including a cap on the level of active ingredients and packaging.

4. The correct answer was B…

Yup. That means if it’s a package of flavoured gummies or sour keys or what have you, according to Health Canada regulations, the total amount of THC in all the pieces must not exceed 10 milligrams. Incidentally, weed extracts are limited to 1,000 milligrams of THC per container. So, a bottle could contain 100 THC capsules of an extract, with each containing 10 milligrams of THC. As for lotions and other topicals, they also must have no more than 1,000 milligrams of THC in a container.

5. True…

Though the first delivery of edibles and vapes to brick-and-mortar stores sold out in their debut week on the shelves, remember this: licensed producers prepared for months for these markets to open, especially in Ontario. Odds are they are prepared.
